22 Hausa film series, including well-known ones like Labarina and Dadin Kowa, have been suspended by the Kano State Censorship Board for allegedly breaking state censorship laws.
After a management meeting earlier this week, the Board’s Executive Secretary, Abba El-Mustapha, announced the suspension, which went into force immediately.
Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, the Board’s Information Officer, claims that the impacted series were broadcast or disseminated without going through the legal requirements for censoring and clearance.
In an official statement, Sulaiman stated, “The Board has canceled the 22 Hausa film series for breaching our rules, which demand that all movies be presented for screening before public release.”Dakin Amarya, Mashahuri, Gidan Sarauta, Wasiyya, Tawakkaltu, Mijina, Wani Zamani, Labarina, Mallaka, Kudin Ruwa, Boka Ko Malam, Wayasan Gobe, Rana Dubu, Manyan Mata, Fatake, Gwarwashi, Jamilun Jiddan, Shahadar Nabila, Dadin Kowa, Tabarmar, Kishiyata, and Rigar Aro are included in the complete list of the suspended series. Sulaiman emphasized that the Board is empowered by law to control and censor all movies that are made, marketed, streamed, or televised both inside and outside of Kano State.
“Producers are expected to submit their productions for censorship approval between Monday, May 19, 2025, and Sunday, May 25, 2025, and told to cease airing or streaming their content on television or online platforms,” he stated.
He issued a warning that there would be legal repercussions if they did not cooperate within the allotted period.
In order to bolster its enforcement efforts, the Board also urged television stations, internet streaming services, and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to make sure that the public only sees authorized content.
