Yesterday, a three-story structure along Adeniji-Adele Road in the Isale Eko neighborhood of Lagos State fell, narrowly sparing four people from death.
The Lagos State structure Control Agency (LASBCA) had designated the structure for demolition a few months prior, and it partially collapsed at the back.
According to residents who talked to The Guardian, the building’s tenants were asked to leave two years ago but chose not to do so. Officials from the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Bureau of Civil Aviation (LASBCA), and other rescue teams were among the emergency responders on the scene.
In order to ease traffic flow in the neighborhood, LASTMA rerouted cars from Zenith to their different destinations via the Oba’s Palace and Enu Owa.
After ordering the evacuation of the building’s residents as well as those in two nearby buildings, LASBCA later razed the damaged structure. “After the morning prayer, we heard the noise of the collapse,” stated Ustaz Abduganiyu Anofiu, a resident. Four people were saved alive and transported to the hospital after locals hurried to the scene.
Due to the high expense of rent, the inhabitants chose to remain in the building. People were still residing in the building even though the gates to the stores had been taken down some time ago.
A self-contained room in this region costs N1.4 million, yet some people don’t make up to N100,000. The government is not prepared to improve people’s circumstances, despite its campaigns against stealing and other vices.
