Assault: Ogun Monarch Is Being Held In Custody Until The Terms Of His Bail Are Fulfilled.

Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, the suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, has not complied with his bail requirements and has been placed under remand at the Ilaro Correctional Centre in Ogun State.

This was confirmed to Newsline on Wednesday by Yinka Odukoya, the correctional facility’s spokeswoman, who said the monarch was still being held since he had not yet completed his bail.

“Yes, he is under our custody, which indicates that he has not been able to comply with the bail requirements set by the court yesterday,” Odukoya stated. But he will be released as soon as he does.

The suspended monarch was arraigned by the Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday in connection with a widely shared video that showed him attacking Abraham Areola, 73.

The suspended monarch was charged with conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to create a breach of the peace, according to the charge sheet (MH2b8c/2025).

The charge stated: “That on January 21, 2025, at approximately 1100 hours, Abdul-Semiu’m’ and other individuals at large conspired to commit a misdemeanor, specifically assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, thereby committing an offense that is in violation of and punishable under Section 517 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.”

That on the same day, time, and location in the aforementioned Magisterial District, you, Abdul-Semiu’m’, and other currently at large unlawfully assaulted one Areola Abraham by slapping him on the face and ear, in violation of Section 351 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, Nigeria, 2006.

“That on that same date, time, and location in the aforementioned Magisterial District, Abdul-Semiu’m’ and others at large did act in a way that was likely to cause a breach of the peace by forcing one Areola Abraham’m’ to kneel down and assaulting him in public, thereby committing an offense that is punishable under Section 249 (d) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State of Nigeria, 2006.”

The accused entered a not guilty plea to the allegations against him when he appeared before Magistrate F. A. Iroko.

He was given bail by the court with two sureties, each worth N5 million, who had to live inside the court’s boundaries.

A hearing in the matter was postponed until March 6.

Widespread outcry followed the release of a viral video that showed Ogunjobi physically and verbally abusing Areola.

Ogunjobi cursed at Areola and accused him of plotting against him and his family as he made him kneel on the road in the two-minute video.

Reportedly a retired police officer, the suspended monarch boasted about his law enforcement contacts and vowed to put Areola in jail.

One of Ogunjobi’s assistants once hit the old man and told him to bow down in front of the king.

The state government’s prompt suspension of the monarch has been praised by Ogun State’s Coalition of Civil Society Organizations.

The group denounced the attack and demanded thorough prosecution in a statement released Tuesday, which was signed by Comrade Solomon Bankole, its chairman.

In a similar vein, the state Police Community Relations Committee praised the police and the government for acting quickly to secure the victim justice.
The PCRC also demanded that the person who smacked the victim be taken into custody by the police.

Samson Kunle Popoola, the State PCRC Chairman, gave the public his word that the committee will take an unbiased stand on issues pertaining to the fundamental human rights of people living in Ogun State.
