A few days after Oborevwori’s PDP governor counterpart in Akwa Ibom, Umo Eno, supported President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office, the defection occurred.
The governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, along with his deputy and commissioners, have switched from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
On Wednesday, a press conference in Asaba revealed their defection.
The defection was made just days after President Bola Tinubu was endorsed for a second term in office by Umo Eno, another PDP governor and Oborevwori’s colleague in Akwa Ibom. But he hasn’t formally defected to the APC yet.
The fact that the PDP has been the only political party to rule the state since 1999 makes Mr. Oborevwori’s switch to the APC a serious setback for the party.
In the meantime, Ifeanyi Okowa, the predecessor of Mr. Obervwori and Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2023 elections, is also expected to leave the PDP and join the APC.
