Ex-police officer Kwajafa regrets the formation of SARS

Malam Fulani Kwajafa has expressed regret over the brutality of now-disbanded SARS unit – The retired police officer noted that the unit, purposely created to tackle armed robbery, later derailed from its mission – understands that Kwajafa is one of the police officers who led the formation of SARS during President Muhammadu Buhari’s military regime in 1984

Fulani Kwajafa, a retired police officer who championed the formation of the controversial Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS), has expressed utmost regret over the creation of the now-dissolved unit. Speaking with BBC Hausa on Thursday, October 15, amid ongoing outrage generated by the disbanded unit, Kwajafa lamented that the formation, unfortunately, derailed from the purpose of its creation before it was disbanded.

He further explained that the motive for the creation of SARS was borne out of a necessity to create a strategy that would champion the fight against armed-robbery that was rampant in the country then.

Expressing regret, the retired police officer submitted that “even among the SARS there are armed robbers.” In his words: “The IGP called me that we should do something to save the country from armed robbery incidents; I accepted the offer and requested for time and materials. I then mobilized personnel for the task. ”Four months after the formation of SARS in 1984, the unit flushed out the criminals and there was peace all over following the successful operation.” “The stories I am hearing about the activities of SARS are damaging; I ruled that even among the SARS there are armed robbers.
