The fire incident, which started by 5:25 pm, affected the studio, production studio, the administrative department and the reception of the Radio Station in Abakaliki, Ebonyi state capital. Some sections of Unity FM Abakaliki, a subsidiary of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria(FRCN), have been gutted by fire.
The staff of the station was seen running helter-skelter in search of how to immediately put out the fire. A staff, Mr Godwin Ugwuta, who witnessed the incident explained he was in the production studio when he noticed smoke emerging in the area.
Another staff who was in the live studio at the time of the incident, Mr. Kelechi Ogoamaka, said he narrowly escaped death as the passage leading to the live studio had been taken over by fire when he was pulled out. Another staff, Sunday Mbam, lamented that the fire has crippled the operations of the station.
“We may not be able to operate until the station is repaired,” he said.
The General Manager of the station, Ogbuefi Rex Eze, said he was informed there was a bang shortly after the engineers changed from public power line to generator.
He was however grateful the fire did not affect the transmitter. It was however gathered that the intervention of Men of Fire Service helped to put out the fire before it could get worse.
