Taiwo Awoniyi, a striker for Nottingham Forest, is in an induced coma following the initial round of surgery for a severe stomach injury
In the 88th minute of Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester at the City Ground, the 27-year-old Nigerian international tried to get on the end of a cross from Anthony Elanga but struck the post.
According to sources who spoke, Awoniyi’s gut was ruptured during the incident.
He is still in the hospital after undergoing surgery on Monday night; the remaining steps are scheduled to be finished on Wednesday.
Newsline reported on Tuesday that Awoniyi was “recovering well” from the procedure.
Awoniyi, who was sent on as a late substitute for Ibrahim Sangare on Sunday, endured a lot of abuse on the field.
The assistant referee did not raise his flag until after Awoniyi’s collision, even though Elanga was offside when he grabbed the ball.
When there is a chance for a goal to be scored right away, assistant referees are instructed to hold their flag down until the play is finished.
The video assistant referee (VAR) can then review the event if a goal is scored.
Critics claim that the protocol puts players in unnecessary danger even though it permits goals to be scored.
Following the game, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis walked on the field to voice his displeasure with manager Nuno Espirito Santo regarding the way in which Awoniyi’s injury was handled.

According to Forest, Awoniyi’s injury served as “a strong reminder of the physical hazards involved in soccer and why a player’s well-being and health must always come first” on Tuesday.
According to the specialist, it is “potentially life-threatening.”
Awoniyi’s injuries might be lethal, according to specialist colorectal surgeon Gillian Tierne.
“The wound is really severe. Tierney stated, “It could be fatal.”

In a medical facility, a patient would be sent for a CT scan, which could take up to ten hours.
“I think it would be very understandable to miss it if it happened to an athlete who was incredibly fit, muscular, and on adrenaline. It would be difficult to diagnose intestinal fluid leakage right away.
“The stomach would be opened during surgery, which is typically necessary. 9% is the morals stat. An athlete who underwent the operation would therefore have a strong chance of recovering if they were really fit.
