Former National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members around Nigeria are now receiving N44,000 in minimum salary arrears from the Federal Government.
Corps members who finished their service prior to the introduction of the new N77,000 monthly stipend earlier this year are the target of the payment, which started this week.
The arrears have begun to impact beneficiaries’ accounts across the country, according to many confirmations from former corps members on the social media platform X (previously Twitter).
Context
According to a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, which was signed by Mr. Ekpo Nta, the commission’s chairman, the Federal Government authorized the rise of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) monthly stipend from N33,000 to N77,000 on September 25, 2024.
Following the passage of the National Minimum salary (Amendment) Act 2024, which increased the national minimum salary from N30,000 to N70,000, the decision to enhance the NYSC allowance was a component of a larger adjustment.
Ayodele Olawande, the Minister of Youth Development, explained that the necessary budgetary allocations were not in place at the time of the approval, which resulted in the postponement of the disbursement.
In addition, the government promised that the backlog of arrears owed to corps members for the period between July 2024 and February 2025 would be cleared soon. Despite the approval, the actual payment of the increased allowance began in March 2025, representing a six-month delay from the initial approval.
GENERAL AWARENESS;
The NYSC received N29.54 billion from the Federal Government in the fiscal year 2025 to provide kits, transportation, and food for corps members. This funding comes from the Federal Ministry of Youth Development’s miscellaneous expenditures for NYSC. Additional noteworthy allotments include money for athletic events, publicity, honoraria, and camp facility upgrades.
Plans to establish specialized service arms under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with a focus on the healthcare and education industries were announced by the federal government. This would help alleviate severe shortages in these vital services by allowing corps members to be deployed to underprivileged rural communities.
The federal government also proposed a reform committee tasked with overhauling the NYSC. The committee’s mandate includes reviewing existing policies, engaging stakeholders, and recommending reforms to modernize the scheme.
