Barcelona star Lamine Yamal stated that he is more concerned with being himself than with being compared to Lionel Messi in the lead-up to Wednesday’s Champions League semi-final matchup with Inter Milan.
The 17-year-old sensation has established himself as a vital member of Barca’s right wing, where Messi, the team’s all-time leading scorer, played for many years. Both players attended La Masia’s junior academy.
Having Messi on the right side of the attack, Barcelona last advanced to the Champions League final in 2015. Yamal hopes to guide the Catalan powerhouses there this year.
As I don’t compare myself to anyone, much alone Messi, I don’t compare myself to him,” Yamal said to reporters on Tuesday.
“We consider ourselves to be better every day and to be better the next day.
“So, I don’t think the comparison makes sense, and Messi even less so— I’m going to have fun and be myself.”
According to Yamal, the Argentine striker is the best player of all time.
“As the greatest player in history, I obviously admire him, but I don’t compare myself to him,” he reaffirmed.
Yamal will make his 100th appearance for Barcelona in all competitions if he plays Wednesday against Inter Milan at the Olympic Stadium as anticipated.
As Barcelona defeated rivals Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday, Yamal assisted on two goals, contributing to the team’s possible treble this season.
Yamal continued, “I’m really excited, it’s my first (European) semi-final, and for many others in the team too.” With no anxiety before the game, Yamal remarked.
