Reuters, JERUSALEM/WASHINGTON/ISTANBUL, June 24 Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that he had given the order for the military to attack Tehran after what he said were Iranian missiles were fired in defiance of the ceasefire that U.S. President Donald Trump had declared just hours before.
Iran claimed that the truce had not been broken. According to Iran’s Nour News, the general staff of the armed forces denied that any missiles had been launched in the last few hours in the direction of Israel.
Early on, the events cast doubt on the ceasefire that was supposed to put an end to the 12-day war.
In a statement, Katz claimed that he had given the Israeli military the command to continue high intensity operations targeting regime assets and terror infrastructure in Tehran” because of “Iran’s blatant violation of the ceasefire declared by the President of the United States.”
Trump had written, “THE CEASEFIRE IS NOW IN EFFECT,” on Truth Social just hours before. DO NOT VIOLATE IT, PLEASE.
Following Trump’s declaration, the truce was recognized by Iran and Israel. Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, claimed that his nation had accomplished its objectives when it launched its surprise strike on Iran on June 13: to eliminate its missile and nuclear programs.
“Israel thanks President Trump and the United States for their support in defence and their participation in eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat,” Netanyahu had stated.
Israel was compelled to “unilaterally accept defeat and accept a ceasefire” by Iran’s military, according to the Supreme National Security Council, the country’s top security council.
It stated that in response to “any act of aggression by the enemy,” Iran’s military will “keep their hands on the trigger.”
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has stated that if Israel ceased its attacks by 4 a.m. Tehran time, Iran will cease its retaliatory assaults.
According to the Israeli ambulance service, four persons were killed by rockets in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba in the final attacks before the truce. According to Iranian sources, a hit on a residential building in northern Iran killed nine individuals, including a nuclear expert.
