Key Statements In The N109.5 Billion Fraud Trial Were Withheld By The EFCC, According To The Former Accountant General.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) did not provide all of the statements that Ahmed Idris, the former Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), made during their inquiry, he told an Abuja High Court on Wednesday.

Idris spoke during a trial-within-trial session that Justice Yusuf Halilu ordered, claiming that only 13 of his 16 statements—excluding three that described the involvement of government agencies and officials in the case’s central consultancy—were submitted to the court.

Idris’ attorney, Chris Uche (SAN), objected to the statements’ admission on the grounds of claimed inducement and deceit, which prompted the special hearing.

Idris faces 14 counts of suspected theft and illegal diversion of N109.5 billion in public monies, together with Geoffrey Olusegun Akindele, Mohammed Kudu Usman, and Gezawa Commodity Market and Exchange Limited.

The former AGF testified that he was not represented by counsel when he made his statements, especially those dated June 10, June 27, and July 5, 2022, and that EFCC investigators had instructed him on what to write.

He claimed that none of his statements were videotaped, which is necessary for accurate documentation of cautionary confessions, and disputed that his attorney was present during any of the interrogations.

In order to allow the prosecution to cross-examine, Justice Halilu postponed the hearings until July 17.
