According to reports, Manchester City is interested in competing with fellow Champions League team Newcastle to sign the best goalkeeper in the Championship.
City will want to quickly regain their juggernaut status after ending a period of dominance in the Premier League. They did, in fact, lose their title to Liverpool after four years of dominating the top flight.
In order to bolster their team and return to the top, City is now interested in a number of talented players.
Soon, the goalkeeper position at the Etihad will be a fascinating one. According to the i Paper, there is “uncertainty” regarding Ederson’s future as the current goalie.
He was recently rumored to resign this summer in exchange for Saudi money, and his contract expires in 2026.
James Trafford, the goalkeeper for Burnley, is therefore mentioned as having “potential” interest. The Englishman never played a game at City, despite having gone through their academy.
But at Burnley, he has been a revelation, keeping clean sheets in 29 of 45 Championship games last season, or 64.4% of games in which he did not give up.
Trafford has other suitors in the top flight, despite the Clarets’ return to the Premier League. There have been rumors of interest from Newcastle for a while, and the report claims they are still very much interested in him.
Though a deal for Trafford may be “difficult,” St. James’ Park acknowledges that he is their preferred long-term goalkeeper.
Given that Newcastle has guaranteed Champions League football for the upcoming campaign, many other teams may also have trouble signing Trafford.
Nevertheless, the financial power of City and the allure of starting at the top of one of the top teams in the nation, where Trafford could realize what would have once been a dream of starting, may change the situation with regard to a move to the Etihad.
