Minimum Wage: According To NLC, There Is No Going Back On The Deadline

The Nigeria Labour Congress has stated that it still stands by its December 1 deadline for state governors to enact the new minimum wage by the end of November 2024.

In a text message to our correspondent in Abuja, Benson Upah, the NLC’s Head of Protocol and Public Relations, affirmed this.

Remember how the NLC forced state governments to enact the new minimum wage by December 1, 2024?

“The ultimatum is still in effect, yes. There has been no change,” Upah told newsline.

More state administrations are now working to fulfill the deadline, but they have not yet reached a consensus with the organized labor movements in their states at the time the ultimatum was issued.

In a meeting with the state chapter of the NLC on Monday, the Sokoto State Government requested the representatives to offer their proposal for the pay adjustment.

This was disclosed during the meeting by Alhaji Idris Gobir, the Deputy Governor.

Gobir stated, “Go and bring your proposal for the implementation of the new minimum wage, and I assure you that I will facilitate the process of quick harmonization.”

Abdullahi Jungul, the chairman of the Sokoto State NLC, praised the government’s seeming dedication to the pay review.

He assured civil servants that the union would make its proposal as soon as possible and advised them to maintain their composure.

Since then, the state NLC has put in its proposal.

The Zamfara State Government declared last week that it will soon start paying the new minimum wage following the continuous verification of workers in the state in an effort to fulfill the deadline.

The state government clarified that the actions of ghost workers were the cause of the implementation delay.

Remember that the state did not enforce the N30,000 2019 minimum wage under the administration of previous Governor Bello Matawalle.

The Taraba State Government also declared that a new minimum wage would be implemented in an effort to meet the deadline.

Beginning in November 2024, the implementation will take place.

Paul Maigida, the state head of service, recently revealed this in a statement.

The announcement said, “I would like to notify you that His Excellency, Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has approved the implementation of a new minimum wage of N70,000 for workers in Taraba State, effective November 2024.”

Additionally, Caleb Mutfwang, the governor of Plateau State, authorized the immediate implementation of a minimum salary of N70,000 for state employees.

This came after the state governor and the Committee on Consequential Adjustment on Salaries reached an agreement on November 13, 2024.

Our correspondent discovered that the Committee on Minimum Wage was still engaged in negotiations for state employees in Cross River State.

Despite growing inflation, our correspondent in Imo learned that the state administration had remained mute and that the Osun State minimum wage committee had not yet unveiled any worker packages.

Tommy Etim, National Vice President of the Trade Union Congress, said our correspondent that the TUC was keeping an eye on events nationwide.
