MTN Increases Data Costs And Imposes A 50% Tariff Hike.

MTN, the biggest telecom provider in Nigeria, has started implementing a 50% pricing rise that was authorized by the Nigerian Communications Commission in January.

For the time being, call and SMS rates are unaffected by the change, which is seen in the new data plan prices.

In an interview with our journalist on Tuesday, a top MTN executive who wishes to remain anonymous confirmed the situation.

Indeed, we have begun revising our price lists.

“But this is a slow process, and we haven’t finished it for all products yet,” the source stated.

A number of data plans are the main targets of the price changes.

The 1.5GB monthly plan, which was originally priced at N1,000, has been replaced by a 1.8GB plan that now costs N1,500, according to our correspondent’s findings on Tuesday.

The price of the 20GB plan has gone up from N5,500 to N7,500, and the 15GB plan has gone up from N4,500 to N6,500.

The increases have been significantly more pronounced for larger data bundles.

According to the new list, the price of the 600GB 90-day plan has increased from N75,000 to N120,000, while the 1.5 terabyte 90-day plan has increased from N150,000 to N240,000.

Citing growing operating costs and the need to guarantee the long-term viability of the telecommunications industry, the NCC announced the price increase on January 20.

The Commission emphasized that the decision is in line with its regulatory duty under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, through Reuben Muoka, its Director of Public Affairs.

The National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, however, has expressed disapproval and threatened to take legal action in opposition to the authorized pricing rise.
