Alcatraz, a former prison on a small island of the same name off the coast of San Francisco that once housed some of the most dangerous criminals in the nation, including Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, and James “Whitey” Bulger, will be rebuilt and reopened, according to a Newsline announcement by President Donald Trump.
Trump said in a post on a Newsline that the prison, which closed 60 years ago because of its dilapidated infrastructure and expensive upkeep, “will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE.” He later told reporters that the idea was “just an idea” he had as federal judges pushed to ensure deported migrants had due process.
Before turning into an infamous federal prison in 1934, Alcatraz was one of the most highly fortified military installations on the West Coast. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and historical landmark.
