During President Bola Tinubu’s official visit to Anambra State on Thursday (today), members of the All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, and other party supporters and support groups are not permitted to wear party uniforms.
In a press release released on Thursday, the Anambra State government revealed this information through Dr. Alex Obiogbolu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters.
Party members were expressly cautioned against wearing party uniforms to the newly renovated Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, where Tinubu is scheduled to have a high-level town hall meeting between the president and important state stakeholders during the official business visit.
According to Obiogbolu’s statement, the decision was made to prevent needless political rivalry and public theatrics that would detract from the president’s visit’s main objective.
This is to notify everyone attending President Bola Tinubu’s reception tomorrow in Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, that they should all wear muftis,” he said.
“Please don’t wear Support Group uniforms or APGA apparel.”
Our correspondent discovered that the direction was required due to the fact that both APC and APGA support groups had allegedly organized their members to show their support by attending the event in uniform.
However, it was learned from sources that the government’s decision is intended to provide a united reception for the President and to depict a nonpartisan climate in the interest of public order and decorum.
According to the sources, the APC, the president’s party, had voiced worries that, given the timing during an electioneering season, the visit may be seen as a vote of no confidence in Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, their candidate for governor.
One of the requirements before the President consented to attend was that all political parties, particularly the APC and APGA, forbid its members from donning party uniforms.
During the visit, the president is anticipated to commission “legacy” projects, such as Solution Fun City, the new state government building, and numerous more.
It was announced six days ago that Tinubu would be in the state on May 8.
In the meantime, 1,531 officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were sent to Anambra State on Wednesday to guard the president’s visit.
