THE DARK SIDE OF ALCOHOL & TREATMENT OF ALCOHOL ADDICTION

Most people who drink alcohol don’t stop just at once. While many people drink in moderation, some don’t.

The active ingredient in alcoholic beverages, a simple molecule called ethanol, affects the body in many different ways. It directly influences the stomach, brain, heart, gall bladder, and liver. It affects levels of lipids ( cholesterol and triglycerides) and insulin in the blood as well as inflammation and coagulation. It also alters mood, concentration, and coordination.

We would be discussing 3 effects of Alcohol on your body which includes

  1. Inflammatory Damage.

The liver is an organ that helps/aids the breakdown and removal of harmful substances from your body, including alcohol. Long-term alcohol use interferes with this process. It also increases your risk of chronic liver inflammation and liver disease. The scarring caused by this inflammation is called cirrhosis. Women are at a higher risk of developing alcoholic liver disease. The female body is more likely to absorb more alcohol and need longer periods of time to process it.

  1. It affects the central nervous system

One area of alcohol that affects so easily in the human body is the central nervous system. Alcohol reduces communication between your brain and your body. This makes coordination more difficult. Drinking also makes it difficult for your brain to create long-term memories. It also reduces your ability to think clearly and make rational choices. Chronic and severe alcohol abuse can cause permanent brain damage. This can lead to WERNICKE – KORSAKOFF SYNDROME, a brain disorder that affects memory.

  2. Irregular heartbeat
  3. Stroke
  4. Heart Attack
  5. Heart Disease
  6. Heart Failure

However, treating alcohol addiction can be complex and challenging. In order for treatment to work, the person with an alcohol addiction must want to get sober. You can’t force an addict to stop if they are not ready. A common initial treatment option for someone with alcohol addiction is an outpatient or inpatient rehabilitation program.

An inpatient program can last anywhere from 30days to a year. It can help someone handle withdrawal symptoms and emotional challenges. Outpatients treatment provides daily support while allowing them to live at home.

Someone with an alcohol addiction may also benefit from other treatment including: drug therapy, counseling and nutritional changes. A doctor may prescribe drugs to assist with other emotions common in the recovery.

Therapy is useful to help teach someone how to manage the stress of recovery and the skills needed to prevent a relapse. Also, a healthy diet can help undo damage alcohol may have done to the person health like weight gain or loss
