You, welcome back to New York City. Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) has returned to New York City after three seasons of traveling the world, beginning in the sun-dappled sky of Los Angeles and ending in the foggy streets of London and the suburban hills of Madre Linda. This, in turn, has led to the conclusion of Joe’s tale in You’s fifth and final season, which premieres on April 24.
“I do believe that New York is the best place to see the show,” Badgley says to Tudum. That’s where it all began. It’s fitting that it ends there.

But homecomings aren’t always easy. A new clip from the You Season 5 opener (seen above) shows Joe returning to his old haunts, such as Mooney’s bookstore, out of fear of arousing old spirits. When Joe last visited, he killed his girlfriend Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail), kept up a complex cover-up, and eventually left the city. The store was recently purchased for Joe’s husband by his millionaire wife, Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie).Instead of using Mooney’s basement to confine the newest object of his obsession, he has left it unaltered. In fact, Joe is so eager to get over his dark past that he is considering selling Mooney’s entirely. He has put down the proverbial knife and replaced it with a couture tux.
“You don’t need to be haunted anymore,” Joe tells himself in voiceover.Something may not be ready to let Joe leave his violent past just yet, based on the hidden handprints in the Mooneys’ window. It’s inconvenient since he has more important things to do than deal with abandoned property. Three years after the conclusion of Season 4, the new season begins. The two have firmly established themselves as New York’s favorite “it” pair, with Kate serving as the CEO of the Lockwood Corporation.
In a technical sense, Ritchie claims that Joe and Kate are “pretty loved up in a very chilled out, not particularly passionate way, but just happily married.” particularly now that Joe’s kid Henry (Frankie DeMaio) has been recovered and they are parenting him together. Nothing, however, is ever what it seems to you. Kate had been finding it difficult to atone for her previous transgressions. The actor states, “Joe is hoping to make amends because, as we all know, he has done a fair number of bad things.” Everything is going well. Clearly, that cannot continue.
Co-showrunner Justin W. Lo claims that Joe has “accepted his darker side” in the wake of Season 4’s discoveries. In Season 5, there will be some significant questions as Joe “makes peace” with his deadly demons. “He wants a good life for his son and to live with Kate, with all the money and privileges.” On the other hand, Joe has been suppressing his darker tendencies. Is it feasible? says Michael Foley, co-showrunner. The main focus of Season 5 is getting Joe home. He is attempting to reconcile his nature, identity, and deservingness of love—even if he is acting on his violent impulses and being his true self.
Joe’s repression has made him into Season 5’s “You.” Badgley claims that “he is the object of his narration and of his thought.” When discussing Kate, the third person is used. All other people use the third person. That’s important.
The show revolves around Joe’s struggle with his own fundamental tendencies, which “should be quite limited, right? He wants to kill people, that’s all,” Badgley reflects. It’s a challenging idea to continually innovate, and the fact that the authors do so is a credit to them. I genuinely think, “Wow, you pulled that off,” every season. You were able to make room for fresh ideas in this notion.
The video teases Joe’s next target for his most heinous wants. Someone from the Lockwood Corporation could be the source of a hit story that threatens to ruin Kate’s image. It appears like Kate’s half-brother Teddy (Griffin Matthews) is on her side, but her sister Reagan (Anna Camp) is a formidable foe.
He’s in a pit of vipers, for sure. “They are all products of [their father], Tom Lockwood, who was a corrupt, Machiavellian bitch’s son,” Foley claims. “Kate’s animosity toward her sister Reagan was heightened when he gave her the kingdom after his death. Reagan now rises from his bed each morning planning how to replace Kate.
Is Reagan responsible for the hit piece, then? Does Joe need the answers from Maddie (Camp), her twin sister? Or are there other adversaries lurking in the shadows of NYC, just ready to attack? And what does Joe have in store for the invisible person that is hiding out in Mooney’s?
Discover the answers to all of those questions and more when You Season 5 debuts on April 24. This includes the intriguing mystery of Joe’s story’s eventual conclusion.
