The controversy surrounding Nigerian gospel musicians’ salaries for performing at churches and Christian gatherings has been rekindled by a recent comment made by Pastor Femi Lazarus of Light Nation Church.
Pastor Lazarus attacked gospel artists who put money before ministry in a widely shared video.
He claimed that it had turned into a show and that someone had come here to sing for N5 million.
In response to Pastor Lazarus’ remarks, Nigerian R&B musician Timi Dakolo defended the freedom of gospel performers to make a living from their art.
“You ought to receive the compensation you are due. The expense of a studio session, production, and promotion is high. You have more tunes to release, rent to pay, and a family to support. Even while music is spiritual, it is also art, so we should stop these attacks on people’s work,” Dakolo stated.
Additionally, he denounced religious leaders who try to guilt-trip gospel performers, highlighting their right to a comfortable existence.
Dakolo urged Lazarus to improve his church choir and use them at events if he couldn’t afford to hire well-known gospel performers.
“The gaslighting must end. Use your choir members and give them the same amount you would have given the guest musician if you are unable to pay others” Timi Dakolo said.
