An orchestra violinist who recently underwent an operation to remove a brain tumor had to play her instrument to ensure surgeons did not damage the part which controls the movement of her hands.

Dagmar Turner, a 53-year-old management consultant and passionate violinist from the Isle of Wight, had a tumour removed at King’s College Hospital, according to Sky News.

Before the operation, Dagmar was worried she could lose her music skills but she later pleaded with the surgeons to allow her play the violin while she is being operated on.

According to the surgeons, they mapped her brain, opened the skull and then got her to play the violin as the tumour was removed.

Professor Keyoumars Ashkan, a consultant neurosurgeon at the hospital, said: “This was the first time I’ve had a patient play an instrument,” he said.

“We managed to remove over 90% of the tumour, including all the areas suspicious of aggressive activity, while retaining full function in her left hand.”

Ms. Turner thanked the surgeons afterwards for preserving her 40-year love for the instrument.

“The violin is my passion,” she said.  “I’ve been playing since I was 10 years old. The thought of losing my ability to play was heartbreaking.”

The Government and the Nigerian Customs service has placed zero tolerance on smuggling activities.
It was a shocking exposure as officers of the Nigerian Customs service  intercepted 1, 393 bags of rice concealed in gas cylinders within Ogun State.

Parading the smugglers before newsmen on Wednesday February 19, the Acting Controller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone A in Ikeja, Usman Yahaya said 625 cartons of frozen chicken, 187 jars and 66 drums of vegetable oil were also seized when the suspects were arrested between 5th and 17th February, 2020.

The items conveyed in 12 different vehicles, had a cumulative duty paid value (DPV) of N40.14 million.

Yahaya said;

“Barely two weeks after the Comptroller-General of Customs’ working visit to Lagos where he showcased various seizures made by FOU A worth over N10 billion, we have again intercepted 1,393 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice, 187 jerrycans/66 drums of foreign vegetable oil and 625 cartons of poultry products from unapproved routes within Ogun State between 5th -17th February 2020 based on surveillance and routine patrol.

“This desperate act by these dare-devil smugglers concealing edible items in a gas cylinder further justifies the hard chase by operatives of Customs. DPV of each type of seized items include rice, N27.86 million; vegetable oil, N6.28 million, and frozen poultry N6 million.”

He also admonished members of the public to support the customs in the fight against smugglers.

Chairman of Pinnacle Communications, Lucky Omoluwa is dead.

Omoluwa, who was standing trial over a N2.5 billion alleged fraud case involving the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), died at the National Hospital in Abuja on Tuesday.

Omoluwa first fell ill on Saturday and was admitted at a hospital. He was said to have been discharged after showing signs of improvement.

The deceased reportedly resumed work on Monday but suffered a relapse on Tuesday morning. Omoluwa reportedly died while undergoing treatment.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is prosecuting Omoluwa alongside Ishaq Kawu, suspended director-general of the NBC, and Dipo Onifade, chief operating officer of Pinnacle Communications.

The anti-graft agency accused Kawu of illegal paying N2.5 billion of the digital switch-over (DSO) funds to the private firm owned by Omoluwa.

The anti-graft agency had demanded Kawu’s suspension pending the outcome of the trial. Kawu was suspended last week on the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The federal government had in 2016, released N10 billion to the ministry of information for the digital switchover programme.

A white paper was issued directing that the process should be explicitly handled by government-affiliated companies.

A total of N1.7 billion was subsequently approved as seed grant for the commencement of the switchover.

But the ICPC said during its investigations, it discovered that the process was fraught with corrupt practices.

It alleged that Kawu fraudulently recommended Pinnacle Communications Limited to the ministry for the release of N2.5 billion against the guidelines contained in the white paper.
