To address traffic crashes and increase road safety throughout Nigeria, the Federal Road Safety Corps has launched the National Crash Reporting Information System and a new mobile app.
The idea was hailed as a significant breakthrough for the FRSC, reflecting continuous efforts to better manage road safety through digital transformation, by Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who spoke at the unveiling on Thursday in Abuja.
According to Akume, the purpose of these new tools is to educate drivers and passengers about road safety and accident causes.
“Data on traffic accidents show that, between January and December 2023, 5,081 Nigerians lost their lives in traffic mishaps, while 31,874 others were injured overall.
Moreover, road traffic accidents resulted in 2,776 fatalities and 16,309 injuries between January and July of 2024.
Despite the fact that the FRSC has been creative in enforcing laws against careless driving and inappropriate road usage, these statistics should worry both governmental and non-governmental road safety stakeholders.
“It also serves as a reminder of the necessity for increased effort and swift action to bring these numbers down to the lowest possible level,” he stated.
Akume added that it is anticipated to increase the dedication of drivers and law enforcement to make a good contribution to road safety issues.
“I would want to express my appreciation for the FRSC Management’s endeavors in harmonizing with President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s vision for the Renewed Hope program, which is focused on digital transformation and national economic growth.
Permit me to further state for the record that, in order to serve Nigerians, the Federal Government is dedicated to making sure that these initiatives are maintained with sufficient funding.
Shehu Mohammed, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, stated that the organization still feels that there is space for progress in this digital age.
Mohammed outlined the NACRIS and the smartphone app as essential elements of the FRSC’s dedication to President Bola Tinubu’s digital transformation plan.
“The FRSC still thinks there is room for improvement and development, especially in line with the current global trend in the digital economy, despite our modest achievements.
“Taking into account this worldwide tendency, I made the decision to make my team’s primary goal the digitization of FRSC activities.
“Thus, the Corps is making a conscious effort to coincide with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims at digital transformation, ease of doing business, and economic prosperity for the nation,” he added in reference to the launch of the FRSC Mobile App and NACRIS.
The NACRIS will concentrate on collision reporting and data administration, while the app will provide features like alarms for speeding, reckless driving, and car document verification.
“The appropriate implementation of these features is anticipated to significantly reduce injuries and fatalities resulting from road traffic crashes,” stated the Corps Marshal.
“The FRSC cannot afford to fall behind in this age of rapid technological innovation. The Corps has chosen to modify and advance its activities into the global network service system in light of this.
NACRIS, on the other hand, aims to provide a multi-sectoral strategy for data storage and crash reporting. As everyone knows, decision-makers throughout the world depend on data quality and dependability to help them make well-informed judgments.
“The NACRIS approach is designed to ensure that collated data is used for effective implementation of policies that will positively impact road safety administration and management, given that data is a valuable tool for planning and resource allocation.”
Abiodun Adesida, the chairman of the House Committee on FRSC, commended the new technology and the leadership of the FRSC.
He emphasized that the app offers real-time accident notifications and traffic updates, both of which are crucial for practicing safer driving.
In order to modernize and strengthen the organization’s capabilities, Adesida also mentioned continuing attempts to reform the FRSC Act.
