A Woman Has Tragically Passed Away After Being Struck By A Swordfish While Surfing In Indonesia

Devastating Incident Results in the Loss of Italian Surfer Giulia Manfrini in Indonesia

Giulia Manfrini, a 36-year-old Italian surfer and co-founder of AWAVE Travel, sadly passed away after being struck by a swordfish while surfing off the coast of West Sumatra, Indonesia. An unfortunate accident took place on October 18 near Masokut Island in the Mentawai Islands Regency.

Local authorities report that Manfrini was surfing when a swordfish unexpectedly leaped from the water and struck her directly in the chest. Despite signaling for assistance and receiving prompt first aid from bystanders, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

Manfrini sustained a 5cm-deep wound in her upper left chest and exhibited indications of drowning, according to the medical team’s report. Regrettably, medical interventions were insufficient to preserve her life.

The incident has significantly impacted the surfing community and extended its effects beyond. Fabio Giulivi Sindaco, the mayor of Manfrini’s hometown, expressed his condolences regarding her passing, characterizing her as a dedicated surfer who had achieved her aspirations. James Colston, her fellow co-founder at AWAVE Travel, recalled Manfrini as the company’s essential force, possessing an infectious enthusiasm for surfing.

Manfrini’s remains have been transferred to Padang for repatriation to Italy. Her legacy as a committed surfer and business leader will be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
