Anabela Rungo, the mother of Miss Universe Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina, was arrested by South African police on suspicion of obtaining a South African identity passport fraudulently.
According to local news outlet Sunday World, the Department of Home Affairs stated that Rungo, a Mozambican national, was captured on Saturday in a hideout in Cape Town as part of a joint operation between Home Affairs investigators and the South African Police Service.
According to reports, Rungo was proclaimed persona non grata in September 2024 after investigators discovered discrepancies in her residency status, according to department spokesperson Siya Qoza.
Anabela Rungo was taken into custody by department investigators at a Cape Town residence with the help of SAPS. After discovering that Rungo’s South African documents had been obtained fraudulently, the Department removed them in September 2024, making her ineligible to stay in South Africa, according to Qoza.
Following the issue surrounding her daughter’s participation in the Miss South Africa beauty pageant, Rungo’s status came under examination.
Adetshina was eventually found to be unable to run since she was not a citizen of South Africa.
Because Rungo was allegedly with Adetshina’s small kid when she was arrested, the authorities contacted SAPS kid Protection Services and the Department of Social Development to make sure the child was safe.
