Ibrahim Babangida, the former military head of state, was fortunate to have the opportunity to apologize to Nigerians for some of his acts, according to Babangida Aliyu, a former governor of Niger State.
According to the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, the former military leader should be pardoned for his activities, particularly the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
According to Newsline, Babangida acknowledged that Moshood Abiola, the Social Democratic Party’s candidate, had won the poll and apologized on Thursday for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.
The former leader referred to the election’s annulment as a “accident of history” in the closing paragraph of the 12th chapter of his autobiography, “A Journey In Service,” which was published in Abuja.
“Although I am on record to have stated after the election that Abiola may not have won the election, upon deeper reflection and a closer examination of all the available facts, particularly the detailed election results…there was no doubt that MKO Abiola won the June 12 election,” Babangida said, acknowledging his mistake.
Aliyu stated that the publication of Babangida’s memoir is important for the nation during an appearance on the Prime Time show of Arise News on Thursday.
The former governor also praised the former military leader for his apology to Nigerians for his role in the 1993 presidential election’s annulment.
The human element that we should support and the fact that some things do occur—not necessarily because we are enemies, but rather because of the passing of time—made me very glad, he remarked.
“I think that this is one of my brother Ibrahim Babangida’s luckiest days. President IBB is fortunate to have had the opportunity to express regret to Nigerians for some of his actions after 32 years.
A great man, the previous president has always been. As you may remember, he served as a head boy and prefect in his early years before rising to the position of Head of State, demonstrating his readiness for leadership.
He is a highly esteemed individual. I’ve known this man since I was a young boy. He has a great feeling of generosity and forgiving. His memoir’s release, in my opinion, is important for Nigeria.
