Rotimi Amaechi, the former minister of transportation, has come under fire from Bello Matawalle, the minister of state for defense, for his recent remark that Nigerian politicians are in office to steal, murder, and hold onto power.
Amaechi said this during a two-day National Conference on Strengthening Democracy in Nigeria earlier this week, which focused on measures to improve political integrity and governance in the country.
The former governor of Rivers State added that political elites like President Bola Tinubu would not hand up power to the younger generation without a fight.
Amaechi asserts that political rhetoric and inducements from public officials have the ability to quickly sway and influence Nigerian people.
“All we have here is typical of Nigerians,” he remarked. They’ll be applauding. Politicians get away with anything because of this. Their short-term memory allows them to get away with murder. The votes cannot be defended by any of you present.
“The politician’s goals in Nigeria are to steal, injure, murder, and hold onto power.” You are wasting your time if you believe Tinubu will deliver it to you. We forget history while we talk.
In a statement released on Thursday by Henshaw Ogubike, the Ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Matawalle responded to the remark by calling Amaechi’s remarks offensive and careless.
The former governor was informed by Matawalle that democracy, not violence, intimidation, or lawlessness, is how power is gained.
Nonetheless, he declared that the Tinubu administration is dedicated to maintaining security, democracy, and peace for all Nigerians.
“It is dangerous and reckless for a former public office holder to make such inflammatory remarks,” Matawalle stated.
“No responsible leader should be stoking the flames of violence and political unrest at a time when the government is working tirelessly to consolidate national unity and security.”
“Anyone found inciting violence or attempting to destabilize the country will face the full force of the law,” the minister said, warning Amaechi against misleading young Nigerians.
To be clear, the security services are extremely vigilant. The full weight of the law will be applied to any person or organization discovered to be encouraging violence or seeking to undermine this country.
“Any subversive discourse that aims to erode national cohesion or encourage lawlessness will not be accepted. He issued a warning, saying, “This government will not stand by and let anyone disturb Nigeria’s peace and stability.”
