Army Headquarters Discusses Taoreed Lagbaja’s Alleged Death.

To dispel persistent reports about Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, Defense Headquarters has released a statement.

The DHQ confirms that Lagbaja is now on a well-earned annual leave and refutes rumors that an acting COAS will be appointed.

In response to the rumors, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defense Information, said that the Armed Forces of Nigeria follow established procedures. Lagbaja has been receiving regular briefs from Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans, in accordance with established protocols.

Lagbaja’s leave is part of his 2024 annual entitlement, Gusau said, and he will return to work after it is over. General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, spoke with Lagbaja and confirmed his good health.

The DHQ urged media outlets to confirm information before disseminating it and cautioned those who were propagating baseless rumors to stop. This follows stories of Lagbaja’s purported death and conjecture on his health.

Gusau also responded to a widely shared video that called for military action against President Bola Tinubu’s government. He reiterated the military’s allegiance to the democratically elected government and emphasized that such acts are treasonous.

The Nigerian Armed Forces are still dedicated to maintaining democracy and protecting the integrity of the country. The appropriate security services have been instructed to take the required measures against people or organizations advocating for unconstitutional changes.
