The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has announced that a member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, is presently undergoing interrogation at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters.
Ikwechegh, the representative for Aba North & South Federal Constituency, has been accused of assaulting an e-hailing driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
A trending video depicts a lawmaker striking a driver after the driver inquired about the delivery fee, questioning whether the driver was aware of his identity.
The legislator also indicated a willingness to ensure the driver would be untraceable, without facing repercussions.
On Monday, the command spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, announced that an investigation has begun regarding the matter.
She stated that preliminary investigations have already indicated that Abuwatseya was in the process of delivering a package to Ikwegh when a disagreement occurred regarding the delivery method.
Adeh stated, “Alexander Ikwegh, the representative for the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State.” The event took place on October 27, 2024, at a residence located on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
The FCT Police Command has acknowledged a report at the Maitama Divisional Headquarters concerning an incident involving a Bolt driver, Mr. Stephen Abuwatseya, and Hon. Alexander Ikwegh, the representative for the Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State. The event took place on October 27, 2024, at a property located on Zamfara Crescent, Maitama, Abuja.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Mr. Abuwatseya was in the process of delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a disagreement emerged regarding the delivery method. During this incident, Mr. Abuwatseya was allegedly subjected to physical assault.
The FCT Police Command has expressed serious concern regarding Hon. Ikwegh’s dismissive attitude towards the office of the Inspector General of Police in light of the recent incident.
Adeh criticized the lawmaker for tarnishing the reputation of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, by challenging the driver to contact him following an altercation.
She stated, “Following the alleged act of slapping the victim, he reportedly expressed with disdain, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” indicating a concerning lack of respect for law enforcement authority.
“The suspect is presently located at the Maitama Police Station, where they are undergoing questioning.”
Adeh stated that CP Tunji Disu has mandated a comprehensive investigation into the issue.
Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Olatunji Disu, has mandated a thorough investigation into the matter.
The Command is dedicated to carrying out an unbiased investigation and guaranteeing justice in every case. Following the conclusion of the investigation, suitable legal measures will be implemented.
