WhatsApp, one of the most popular instant communication apps owned by Meta, has reportedly gone down, with users worldwide unable to send and receive messages.
The outage is affecting both personal chats as well as group chats. Users worldwide have started flooding social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram with posts about being unable to send messages on the app.
The outage began at about 8:4am Tuesday, according to user complaints. WhatsApp has acknowledged the outage.
WhatsApp Web also appears to be affected by the issue.
Downdetector, a popular website that tracks outages across websites and applications, has reported a massive spike of reports about WhatsApp being down.
In a statement released by Meta’s spokesperson said, “We’re aware that some people are currently having trouble sending messages and we’re working to restore WhatsApp for everyone as quickly as possible.”
WhatsApp has become a critical infrastructure in many markets, used by government officials, telecom service providers, and of course, billions of people.
As of 2020, the service was used to send over 100 billion messages a day, a figure that is unrivaled in the industry.
