On Sunday, Chairman of Udu Harbour Market, Freedom Odiete aka Opito was shot dead by armed men. According to reports, this is the third attempt to take his life by armed men.

Opito was attacked in Ekete Community by Cross-and-Stop Junction, along the DSC Expressway in the council area where he managed to escape and his hand was shot.

He later took refuge along Orhuwhorun road, the hoodlums traced him to his hideout and shot him multiple times.

An eyewitness said: “This is the third time gunmen have gone after him. I was two poles away when I heard the gunshots renting the air. When the gunshots subsided we rushed out only to see that it was Opito (Freedom Odiete) that was killed. He was attacked last week but God being so kind, he survived it.

“We learnt that Owhase and Ovwian communities had been having issues of Udu Habour Market. He has been receiving threats from some persons over the issue,”

Confirming the incident, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, Police Public Relations Officer, said: “It is true. We only know that he was shot and it is a suspected assassination. The police is already on a man hunt for the killer(s),”
