In an effort to sell two newborn baby girls, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, have been detained by the Lagos State Police Command on charges of conspiracy and child trafficking.
Patrol officers from the Ojodu Division, who were stationed at the Berger bus stop, a significant access point into Lagos, arrested the accused.
On September 9, 2024, Una and Igbechionwu were stopped while traveling from Abia State to Lagos, according to police reports. The twins were only six days old at the time.
An authorities were notified by a good samaritan, who then made the arrest.
According to preliminary investigations, the two women were carrying out the twins’ mother’s instructions to serve as couriers and deliver the infants to a nurse in Lagos.
The suspects said that the mother sold the babies because she was unable to care for them, and they admitted to obtaining ₦150,000 for their role.
The neonates are currently in the care of a motherless babies’ home where they are receiving medical attention, and the case has been moved to the gender unit of the Lagos State Police Command.
According to the authorities, efforts are still being made to find the other conspirators. The courtroom arraignment of Una and Igbechionwu took place on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
SP The arrest was verified by Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin, who also promised that everyone implicated in the crime would face justice.
