All parties involved in the future Edo State gubernatorial elections are urged by President Bola Tinubu to act honorably and peacefully on Friday.
In a statement headlined “President Tinubu urges peace and civility in Edo State governorship elections,” which was signed by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, his Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, Tinubu delivered this message.
The people of Edo State will choose a new governor on Saturday, September 21, 2024, in a race that is expected to be fierce amongst three main contenders.
These include Monday Okpebholo, a senator representing Edo Central, running on the All Progressives Congress platform with a “Manifesto of Renewed Hope,” Asue Ighodalo, a well-known lawyer and corporate executive, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party, a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association.
“The President begs the candidates running for governorship, political parties, and supporters to respect the democratic process and the will of the people,” Onanuga stated.
“He thinks voters are capable of selecting their future leaders with knowledge.
“President Tinubu emphasizes that patience, tolerance, civility, and respect for the rules of the game are essential for democracy to flourish.”
The President asked all parties involved to cooperate in order to guarantee a successful and peaceful process, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission has pledged to hold a free and fair election.
Tinubu praised the political parties and individuals running for governor of Edo State for their campaigns, which have centered on topics that are important to the people of the state, such as enhancing lives, fostering economic growth, and advancing the development of the country.
Throughout the voting process, he asked all state residents to maintain composure and civility, and he encouraged them to settle disputes amicably with the elected officials.
Furthermore, “President Tinubu expresses unwavering confidence in the professionalism and integrity of INEC officials and security agencies.”
“He exhorts them to maintain objectivity and refrain from taking any actions that might jeopardize the electoral process’s integrity,” Onanuga said in closing.
