Guinea’s coup leader, Mamadi Doumbouya, has been promoted to army general. This is to mark the start of the country’s all-powerful military forces after the coup.
In September 2021, Doumbouya, then 43 years old, took power by force by getting rid of President Alpha Conde. President Alpha Conde had put the colonel in charge of an elite group whose job it was to protect the head of state from coups.
Doumbouya was given the Grand Cross of the National Order of the Colatier, which is the country’s highest honor, in a decree on Friday evening. His supporters have pushed him to run for president when the junta steps down.
This was for “his ongoing efforts to encourage people to get along and work together.”
Since 2020, the military has taken over in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, and Doumbouya is one of several soldiers who have taken power there.
Doumbouya has been in charge of a long-term crackdown on dissent. Many party leaders have been jailed, taken to court, or sent into exile.
Guinea is still a poor country, even though it has a lot of natural resources.
Years of authoritarian or dictatorial rule have been in charge of it.
