Two policemen were murdered by gunmen on Wednesday morning at Nachi community in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Three other officers also sustained severe gunshot wounds in an attack that happened at a police checkpoint in the area around 9am.
It was gathered that the policemen were on duty at the checkpoint when the gunmen took them by surprise and attacked them.
They were killed on the spot as the gunmen shot continuously until they left the scene.
It was gathered that the continuous sound of gunshots caused panic within the area as commuters and passers-by scampered for safety and ran into the bushes.
Enugu police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe said the Command had launched a full scale investigation into the incident with a view to tracking down the assailants.
He said: “Full-scale investigation that will lead to fishing out of the assailants has commenced. Further development will be communicated, please.”
