Nigerian singer, Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as Mr. May D, has said he was the one that introduced the amapiano genre of music to the Nigerian music industry.
Amapiano is a style of house music that emerged in South Africa in 2012. It is a hybrid of deep house, jazz, and lounge music characterized by synths, airy pads, and wide percussive basslines.
The singer’s statement comes after Davido and South Africa’s DJ Maphorisa clashed over who credit should be given concerning the success of Amapiano in Africa.
Taking to his Twitter page May D wrote, “Na me bring amapiano come to Naija, and I have awards to prove that! We started the Naija South African collaboration!
I don’t like saying sh*t like this, but y’all like putting me under the box.”
