The Lagos State Government’s prohibition on single-use plastics, including sachet water, has the support of the Association for Table Water Producers (ATWAP) of Nigeria.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday, Dr. Clementina Ativie, the National President of ATWAP, stated as much.
Etivie stated that in order to guarantee the smooth execution of the program, the organization would collaborate with the state government via the Lagos State Plastic Waste Management Scheme.
According to her, the goal of the plastic waste management program was to encourage recycling while lowering plastic trash.
She claims that the association is dedicated to ethical behavior and environmental sustainability.
“We recognize that single-use plastics and their effects on the environment are a problem.
“To create sustainable solutions, we have worked closely with the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in Lagos State.
Through the Lagos State Plastic Waste Management Fund Scheme, which attempts to lessen plastic waste and encourage recycling, we have notably made progress in lifting the ban.
In an effort to encourage manufacturers to accept accountability for the waste produced by their products, our group has also instituted Extended Producers Responsibilities.
According to Ativie, “this strategy has assisted our members in minimizing their environmental impact while guaranteeing the sustainability of their enterprises.”
To address the issues surrounding plastic waste management, she said, the Plastic Waste Management Fund Scheme Committee would convene representatives from the public, commercial, and civil society sectors.
“As a vital component of this committee, ATWAP is committed to safeguarding and maintaining our members’ enterprises while fulfilling governmental objectives regarding environmental preservation and the public’s demand for clean water.
“The government has consulted with single-use plastic users over the planned ban, taking into account the possible effects on our members’ businesses and the public’s access to clean water.
As a result, the Lagos State Plastic Waste Management Scheme was created and will shortly be put into operation.
According to NAN, the Lagos State Government pledged to completely outlaw single-use plastics by the end of January through the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.
Manufacturers of nylon, sachet water, and other participants in the single-use plastic value chain have differing opinions on the announcement.
