An unspecified number of people have been reportedly killed following the collapse of a multi-storey building in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
In Garki, Abuja, the high-rise structure is situated on the popular Lagos Street.
The structure is home to several flats, while the ground floor is packed with shops, according to an eyewitness, Tanko Dabo, who was at the scene following the tragedy.
He said the building collapsed during the heavy downpour which started around 11:50pm on Wednesday.
”There was wailing all over the place after the building collapsed. Dozens of people are either dead or trapped as the building is fully occupied.
“It was a scene of helplessness with people screaming and going helter-skelter, while the heavy rain continued,” he said.
Lagos Street in Garki is one of the popular areas with nightlife. The street, dotted with eateries and bars, is busy all through the night – every night.
So far, 37 people have been rescued, with two of them killed, emergency officials said.
