Mozuk and Dev’t Partners Bring Self-Testing and HIV Awareness To Abuja Varsity

An HIV awareness campaign targeted at teenagers and young adults has been launched at the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) by Mozuk Mediequip in collaboration with development partners.

Orasure Technologies, JSI Research and Training Institute, Heartland Alliance, and the Student Union Government (SUG) of the University of Abuja collaborated to launch the “OraQuick Campus Storm” campaign.

In Nigeria, the prevalence of HIV among adolescents aged 15–19 is estimated to be 2.9%, however among young people aged 20–24, it can reach up to 32%. Moreover, 34.1% of all new HIV infections in the country occur in this age range. However, the low incidence of HIV testing among adolescents and young people (AYP) is mostly due to the negative attitudes of healthcare practitioners, the fear of test results being disclosed, and the stigma and prejudice associated with their revelation.

The goal of the OraQuick Campus Storm is to promote HIV self-testing among Nigerian youth by giving them accurate information on management and prevention. Additionally, it aims to raise awareness of and demand for mental health and HIV prevention programs that are available in healthcare facilities, including pharmacies, clinics, hospitals, and online platforms.

During the event, Mozuk Mediequip’s Product Manager, Pharmacist Harry Omoakhia, emphasized the importance of awareness in the prevention of new infections. Finding out one’s HIV status through testing is crucial, he said, adding, “Once you have completed the test and are aware of your status, you can take the necessary steps.” If you test positive, you can stop the virus from spreading by starting treatment, leading a regular life, and lowering your viral load.

Omoakhia also noted that many young people are afraid to take part in standard testing at clinics or hospitals because they think they will be assessed. He said that self-testing provides an extra option, allowing people to take tests in the comfort of their own homes.
