The alleged “unjust” treatment of Seaman Haruna Abbas, a military officer who has allegedly been the victim of heinous wrongdoing inside the armed forces, has the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) extremely concerned. Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the NEF’s Director of Publicity and Advocacy, called for quick justice for Abbas and his family in a statement.
“We demand that the military leadership look into this situation right away and provide Seaman Abbas the assistance he needs to become well. It stated that in order to restore his and his family’s dignity, it is imperative that the injustices he has endured be remedied immediately. The statement went on,
“The circumstances surrounding Seaman Abbas’s incarceration raise grave alarms about the accountability and ethical standards within the military hierarchy, as narrated by Mrs. Husaina Abbas during her appearance on the Berkete Family TV station in the Federal Capital, Abuja.”
Mrs. Abbas claimed that her husband’s superior, Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad S. Adamu, the battalion commander, had sentenced him to a harsh six years in prison.
The reported reason for this harsh punishment is not any crime or misconduct that would call for such a harsh punishment; rather, it is due to Seaman Abbas’s admirable action of calling his soldiers to prayer, which is a sign of his devotion to the moral and spiritual welfare of his soldiers.
