Kemi Badenoch, who used to be the British Business Secretary, beat Robert Jenrick in the last round of votes to become the new leader of the Conservative Party.
In the UK, Badenoch is the first black woman to lead a major political party. She takes over the Conservative Party, which just lost the election by the most votes ever.
The party revealed on Saturday morning that she beat Jenrick with 41,388 votes to win 53,806 votes, making her the new leader of the opposition.
While she was running for office, Badenoch promised to bring the Conservatives back to “first principles” and start a series of studies over the next few months to come up with a new set of policies.
The North West Essex MP is also the sixth Tory leader in less than eight and a half years. He or she will have to work hard to bring the party back together after it has been split up.
At the final count of the leadership race, which finished on Saturday, Badenoch told his supporters, “The time has come to tell the truth.” “Now is the time to get things done and start over.”
Even though she faces problems, Badenoch’s straight-forward style has won her a strong following among Conservatives.
She is known for speaking out against identity politics and wanting to limit the role of the government. She supports a group within the party that thinks the party needs to take a strong turn to the right to win back people who have lost faith.
There have been times when she got into arguments with celebrities, members of the media, and even some government officials while she was trade minister. However, this has only made her more popular with members who are wary of institutional and media impacts.
“The task that lies ahead of us is tough but simple,” she said about how important her win was and what she wanted for the party. As His Majesty’s dedicated opposition, our first duty is to hold the Labour government accountable. Our second goal is just as important: to get ready for government over the next few years.
