NITEL Workers Killed As Telecom Mast Collapses In Benue

The victims were dismantling the mast when tragedy struck

A telecommunication mast which collapsed in Kastina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State on Wednesday January 19, killed two staff of Nigeria Telecommunication Limited (NITEL).

The workers were seven in number atop the mast located at NITEL premises near Takum junction in Kastina-Ala. They were reportedly trying to dismantle the mast when it collapsed.

Chairman of Kastina-Ala LGA, Alfred Atera confirmed the incident, adding that five others were rushed to the hospital. 

“After loosing one side of the mast, suddenly the other part collapsed. Two of them (workers) died instantly, while five others were taken to a hospital,” the council boss added.

The state police spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident.

“Two people died; others are in a hospital,” the PPRO said.

The police spokesman said the vehicle was recovered, just as a manhunt had been intensified for the hoodlums.
