Ogun Gov Office Finance Director is killed by robbers, who also take huge amounts of cash.

Gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers on Wednesday afternoon reportedly shot dead Director of Finance and Accounts, attached to the Ogun State Governor’s office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Mr. Taiwo Oyekanmi.

According to credible information obtained by our correspondent, Mr. Oyekanmi was shot and killed as he was making his way back from the bank, where he had gone to withdraw cash before the governor’s budget presentation on Thursday, near the top of the NNPC Bridge on Oke-Mosan road.

It was reported that after being taken to the State Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta, he was declared deceased.

Speaking to reporters under the condition of anonymity, two senior civil servants at the Governor’s Office in Abeokuta stated that the incident had left the Secretariat in a state of mourning.

Mr. Abiodun Alamutu, the State Commissioner of Police, confirmed the incident and stated that police are pursuing the thugs.

Alamutu stated, “The accountant, the director of finance, along with a driver and another individual, left for the bank this afternoon to make some withdrawals.” It was a homemade bullion van that they used. The individual was not included in the movement because he was allowed to travel to attend to certain matters, even though they were supposed to have a police escort.

The story goes that they were harassed on their way back to the office after making the withdrawal. They were being blocked from reaching the top of the NNPC bridge by a vehicle. Five people inside the vehicle descended, opened fire on the director, and then used a sledgehammer to smash open the container holding the money before fleeing.

Since there was no information available at the moment, the police escort left the team and drove off.

The driver stated that he followed them until he lost sight of them along Conference Hotel.

“For our investigation, I have directed the Area Commander to get in touch with the bank and request for the CCTV footage which will give us insight into the vehicle in question and possibly identify the culprits if they ever ventured to step out of the vehicle or maybe they just maintained their position in the vehicle.

“I have reached out to Lagos and everywhere in the command to block all the exits out of the state, while we are trying to identify them because they said they were five and they used hood.”
