Salvatore “Totò” Schillaci, the legendary Italian striker who won hearts at the FIFA World Cup in 1990, has sadly gone away at the age of 59.
After a fight with colon cancer, the Palermo Civico hospital announced his passing on Wednesday morning.
Schillaci’s meteoric ascent to fame during the 1990 World Cup was truly remarkable.
Even though he had only made one appearance for the Italian national team before the competition, he made a big impression by scoring six goals and taking home the Golden Boot and Golden Ball honors.
