The Police Command in Akwa Ibom confirmed that thieves destroyed the ARISE Hospital project in the Akoiyak area of Ibeno Local Government Area. This was a major healthcare effort under Governor Umo Eno’s leadership. Because of what happened on Tuesday, important infrastructure meant to improve healthcare in the state was temporarily lost. SP Timfon John, a spokesman for the police, said that the damage was done to both the buildings and the tools of the ARISE hospital project.
The ARISE Hospital is a part of a bigger plan to make health care better in Akwa Ibom State, especially in rural places. With this project, the state government wants to build and improve basic health care centers in all 31 of the state’s local government areas. The Akoiyak hospital was one of the most important places for this project, and its loss is a big setback for the state’s plans to improve its health care system. It was planned that at least seven basic healthcare centers would be finished and opened by the end of the year, but the project didn’t start until August 14, 2024.
Attacks on public buildings in some parts of the country, like the one on the ARISE hospital, are seen as a worrying trend. The cops have started to look into what happened and are trying to find the people who did it for real. Joseph Eribo, who is the Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom, has made it clear that police will do everything they can to catch the criminals. The police haven’t said anything about any leads in the case, but they have told the public that they are working to solve the problem.
Residents and local officials are worried about the attack because it not only stops important medical services from being provided, but it also makes people feel unsafe in the area. The ARISE hospital project was a big part of Governor Eno’s plan to fix the state’s healthcare problems, like not having enough medical facilities and making it hard for people, especially in rural areas, to get good healthcare. People think that destroying such a well-known project hurts the current efforts to make it easier for people in Akwa Ibom to get health care.
The attack is being looked into by the police, and the state government has condemned it. They have also promised to keep working on the project, even though it has been set back. The government has made it clear that the ARISE healthcare program is important, and acts of vandalism will not stop it. People in the area, including leaders and citizens, are also very angry about the damage and want more protection around public buildings and a stronger promise to keep criminals out of government projects.
This event also brings to light the bigger problem of safety in some places of Nigeria, where attacks on infrastructure, like hospitals, are happening more and more often. These kinds of actions not only slow down progress, but they also make people afraid and unsure of what will happen next. The investigation is still going on, so it’s not clear how quickly the police will be able to catch the criminals and make sure that important state projects like the ARISE hospital keep moving forward. At this point, the main goal is still to keep the area safe and stop any more damage to public property.
