”The State Should Go Ahead And Bring Closure To Their Cases”- Rauf Aregbesola Says As He Asks Governors To Sign Death Warrants Of Condemned Inmates

Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, Minister of Interior has urged Governors across the Country to go ahead and bring closure to the dates of condemned inmates by signing their death warrants.

The Minister speaking on Friday, July 23 at the inauguration of the newly constructed headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS in Osogbo, Osun state capital stated that the major problem of the prison facility is congestion.

He said;

“There are presently 3,008 condemned criminals waiting for their date with the executioners in our meagre custodial facilities. This consists of 2,952 males and 56 females.

“In cases where an appeal has been exhausted and the convicts are not mounting any challenge to their conviction, the state should go ahead, to do the needful and bring closure to their cases.”

He also noted that there can be an exception for those who have grown old while in custody and for those who are terminally ill.
