A small earthquake happened near Grobnik, which is about eight kilometers northeast of Rijeka, Croatia, at 11:03 a.m. on November 13, 2024. The earthquake, which was 3.4 on the Richter scale, was felt in a number of nearby places. According to seismologists, the tremor’s strength at its epicenter was between IV and V degrees on the EMS scale, which shows how bad the shake is.
The hypocenter, or place where the earthquake started, was about 2 km below the top of the earth. At first, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC-CSEM) said the wave was of magnitude 3.4, but after more research, this number was lowered to 3.0.
People who live in Marinić, Viškovo, and Grobnik said the shaking was strong and there was a loud rumble. Many of them wrote about their experiences online. People in the area who commented on the event said things like “It shook well,” “It was very loud,” and “It shook quite a bit.”
There was a lot of shaking because the earthquake happened in a relatively small part of the earth’s crust. People in a lot of places felt the quake, but there have been no reports of major deaths or damage yet. But because the shake was so strong, some people may have felt unsteady, especially in places close to the epicenter.
The earthquake was mild in terms of its depth and size, but it caused worry for people who were in its path. Even though these kinds of earthquakes happen often in the area, the strength of this one still got a lot of attention, especially because many people said they heard a rumbling sound right before the shaking started.
Even though these kinds of things can be scary, the local government is still keeping an eye on things. The Croatian Seismological Service and other groups are keeping people up to date on the quake and looking into any possible aftershocks or other earthquake activity in the area. Short-term shakes are common after earthquakes of this size, so it’s possible that people will continue to feel some shaking in the days to come.
Emergency services haven’t heard of any big problems yet, but they’re still on high alert in case something changes. Residents have been told to stay up to date through official sources and be ready in case there are more earthquakes.
