Timaya Says, “I like Portable Because He’s Crazy Like Me.”

Timaya, a Nigerian musician, has playfully explained why he finds controversial artist Portable so appealing: he reminds him of himself.

In a recent interview with Channels Television, Timaya recalled how he first heard Portable’s song and pointed out the parallels between the two. The Zazu singer, he said, somehow reminds him of his own crazy past.

I informed 2face about Portable on the way to Delta State when he initially came out, which is why I like him. ‘Have you heard that man Portable?’ I asked. Zeh Zazu. I was crazy, therefore that person is exactly like me.”

Although the Gen Z audience may view him as “unproblematic,” the singer admitted that they might not be aware of the wild side of his early career.

Sometimes when I speak to these Gen Zers, they say things like, “Timaya is not a problem.” I simply gaze at them as though they were familiar with me. “Timaya minds his business,” they say, and I pause to think. I was insane back then, but I’ve calmed down today. I was hot as fire and absolutely insane, but I believe there is progress. For me, it was a tactic at the moment.

Timaya explained that he never had any issues with military troops in response to a rumor that dogged his early career.

“The story that I had a bad experience with military men is not true,” he clarified. What would make me interact with them? I don’t mean to disparage or belittle someone, but you have to use common sense or judgment in all you do. I may have been insane, but it was all part of a calculated plan. Since I’m from the Niger Delta and everyone was singing love songs at the time, I didn’t come in as a lover boy, which is why I blew in the industry.”
