During a moving service at his funeral, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu gave the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, a national honor after the fact. The Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) is one of Nigeria’s highest honors. It was given to Lagbaja to celebrate his outstanding service and leadership in the Nigerian Army.
A lot of important people in the Nigerian government were there, like Vice President Kashim Shettima, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abass, and Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. Their appearance at the event showed how much respect and admiration the late Army Chief had in all parts of the government.
Pallbearers placed the coffin in place before the start of the faith service, which made the event itself very sad. Then the Last Post was played to mark a moment of reflection. Then there was a minute of silence to remember Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s life and work. As the country gathered to say goodbye to one of its most respected military leaders, these traditions mirrored the seriousness of the event.
President Tinubu spoke at the event and praised Lagbaja’s important service to Nigeria’s military and national security. He also praised his leadership and dedication to the country. Tinubu’s choice to give the General the CON after his death was a proper tribute to a man who had spent his whole life serving his country, especially when things were hard for Nigeria’s military.
A lot of good things happened during Lt-Gen. Lagbaja’s time as COAS in the areas of military reform, policy, and security operations. His guidance helped to calm down dangerous security situations in many parts of the country, which earned him a lot of respect in the military and beyond. Nigeria’s armed forces were able to stay strong even though there were more security dangers from both inside and outside the country thanks to his strategic vision and hard work.
Lagbaja’s service was recognized by the award of the CON after his death. It was also a message from the Nigerian government that the sacrifices made by its troops, especially at the highest levels, will not be forgotten. It’s also a good way to remember how important the Nigerian Army is to keeping the country’s sovereignty and safety.
The government and the people could also use this time to think about how important it is to keep the values of duty, service, and patriotism. Along with other important people, Tinubu recognized the role that the military and other security agencies play in keeping the peace and order in Nigeria, which is a very big and diverse country.
By praising Lt. Gen. Lagbaja after his death, the Nigerian government showed that it was serious about recognizing the service of its military members and keeping the memories of those who have done great work alive. The event not only remembered a fallen hero, but it also reminded everyone how important it is to stick together as a country and keep supporting the military as they keep working to keep the country safe.
The country is sad about the death of Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja, but his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who served with him and those who continue to gain from the changes he made and the way he led the Nigerian Army.
