Elizabeth of Bosnia and Louis I of Hungary had a youngest daughter, Jadwiga, who was born in 1373. When her father passed away in 1382, she became the heir apparent to the Hungarian throne, and her life took a drastic change.
Jadwiga was engaged to William of Austria at the age of nine, but her fate was different. In search of a capable leader, Polish aristocrats offered Jadwiga the Polish throne in 1384. She agreed and assumed the title of “King” of Poland, which is only given to kings.
The trip Jadwiga took to Poland was dangerous. She encountered threats from other claimants and international powers as she made her way through perilous mountains and woodlands. Some nobility opposed her when she arrived because they didn’t think a female king was appropriate.
Unfazed, Jadwiga displayed extraordinary intelligence and diplomacy. She united Poland and Lithuania under one government by marrying Jagiello, Grand Duke of Lithuania, forming alliances with influential nobility, and obtaining papal approval.
Jadwiga and Jagiello changed Poland together. They
- Founded one of the oldest universities in Europe, the Jagiellonian University in Krakow.
- Enhanced commerce and trade.
- Protected Poland against invasions by Teutonic Knights.
- Encouraged Catholicism to bring the kingdom together.
Unprecedented wealth and cultural development occurred during Jadwiga’s rule. She influenced the history of Eastern Europe, hence her influence goes beyond Poland.
Jadwiga tragically passed away in 1434, not long after giving birth to Elizabeth Bonifacia, her daughter. Her successor, Jagiello, solidified the dominance of their dynasty.
