A Robot to Watch Your Children? Elon Musk Envisions a Sophisticated Future With Machines That Resemble Humans

Elon Musk demonstrated the newest robots that are becoming more human-like during a Tesla event on October 10. According to him, it’s like having your own R2-D2/C-3PO.

“What can it do?” In a video of the occasion that was uploaded to the Tesla website, Musk posed the question. “You may be a teacher or a babysitter. In addition to getting groceries, walking your dog, and serving drinks, it can even mow your yard and be your friend.

The event, titled “We, Robot,” showcased Tesla’s Optimus machines as they waved at guests, distributed goods, and danced in a kind of glass enclosure.

Musk made the news alongside the company’s “Cybercabs,” which are svelte, AI-powered cars without pedals or steering wheels. However, fans won’t be able to purchase them until at least 2026.

Musk did not provide precise dates for the Austin-based Tesla company’s Optimus robots. At scale, they should cost between $20,000 and $30,000, which is less than the long-term cost of a car.

A video taken at the occasion showed a robot watering a houseplant, playing a game with humans at a table, and retrieving groceries from a trunk and placing them on the kitchen countertop.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Musk declared during the California event. “In my opinion, this will be the largest product of any kind ever made. I believe that every one of the world’s eight billion inhabitants will want their Optimus friend.
