Anambra: Gunmen Attack Truck As Two Army Officers Were Killed

Two Army officers were said to have been killed when gunmen shot a truck carrying about five Army officers who were  on their way to a location in Ogwu-Ikpele community,  Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

According to an eyewitness the incident which happened at about 8:10am on Tuesday, also left one of the officers injured, while the Army has taken over the community with heavy shootings going on in the area.

The fleeing gunmen, laid ambush for the soldiers at Amaja axis of Ogwu-Ikpele, took them by surprise by attacking them before fleeing into a nearby bush.

The eye witness said “Five army officers conveying oil production workers from Ogwu-Ikpele to Umunzarabia location, were ambushed at Amaja area of Ogwu-Ikpele by yet to unknown gunmen, two people were killed in the process while one person was injured.”

“As we speak now, Army officers have taken over the whole of Ogwu- Ikpele, with heavy shooting going on in the community. No part of the community is safe, there is fear that the Army will embark on reprisal attack.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, could not confirm the development. He said the state police as command was not yet aware of the incident.

Lt. Col. Jonathan, the Army through its spokesman in the state, when contacted did not confirm or deny the attack but promised to get back, but as at the time of filing this report, he has yet to do so after. He did not respond to repeated calls and messages to his phone line.
